More Than Just an Attorney

Stephanie L. Schutt
Attorney & Founder
Family law requires more than legal knowledge—it requires judgment, composure, and the ability to lead clients through uncertainty with clarity and purpose.

I focus my practice on complex domestic matters, including division of assets, maintenance, child support, custody, parenting time, and dispute resolution. Known for a steady and strategic approach, I guide clients through each stage of the process with precision and transparency, ensuring they feel informed, prepared, and supported at every step.

I regularly handle high-conflict cases, where emotions are heightened and the stakes are significant. In these matters, I bring a measured, thoughtful presence—balancing strong advocacy with the clarity and control required to navigate even the most challenging circumstances.

My Story
Approach
My work is grounded in the belief that effective representation is not only about outcomes, but about how clients experience the process. I approach each case with intention—prioritizing clear communication, thoughtful strategy, and a level of care that reflects the weight of what is at stake.

Clients come to me during pivotal moments in their lives. My role is to provide structure where there is uncertainty, direction where there are difficult decisions, and advocacy that reflects both strength and sound judgment.

Background
Originally from Wisconsin, I relocated to the Kansas City area in 2009 and have since built my career exclusively in litigation-focused practice. I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Criminology from Marquette University and my Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton School of Law.

My early experience included working with the United States Attorney’s Office in the Organized Crime Unit, followed by work in both federal criminal defense and appellate litigation before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. These experiences shaped a strong foundation in litigation strategy and courtroom advocacy.

Over time, my practice became fully dedicated to family law, where I have spent more than a decade handling complex domestic litigation. After years of advancing into partnership roles, I founded SLS Law in 2023 with a clear vision: to create a firm defined by strong leadership, strategic advocacy, and an elevated standard of client care.

Practice & Impact
In addition to representing clients in domestic litigation, I serve within the juvenile justice system, advocating for both parents and children in sensitive and high-impact matters. I also represent the Platte County Public Administrator, further extending my commitment to serving individuals—particularly those in vulnerable circumstances—and ensuring their interests are protected with diligence and care.

I have previously served as legal advisor to organizations including The Dalton Everett Burner Foundation, Support Special Operations Forces, and Kick For Christ—reflecting a broader commitment to using my legal experience in service of the community.

Beyond the Practice
Outside of my work, I value balance, creativity, and connection. I have a personal interest in beauty and skincare, which serves as both a creative outlet and a way to support women-owned businesses. I also enjoy sharing that interest with others, creating opportunities for connection beyond the legal space.

And, of course, time with my dog, Mila—who has become a familiar and welcome presence—is always a priority.

This practice was built with intention—to deliver not only strong legal representation, but an experience defined by clarity, trust, and steady leadership when it matters most.
